LWR catalog features 'gifts of love'

Lutheran World Relief Gifts — an alternative-giving catalog that offers 22 “gifts of love” designed to benefit others worldwide — is now available from the Baltimore-based relief and development organization.

Suggested gifts range from $16 for worms (they turn farm waste into fertilizer, improving soil for farmers) to $5,000 to start a revolving loan fund.

“On these pages you’ll find many gifts, each with a unique story to tell,” writes Lutheran World Relief (LWR) President and CEO Dr. John Nunes in the catalog’s welcome message.  “Like how a hen and chicks gives a woman the opportunity to earn income and care for her family.  Or how a gravity-fed water system gives children and families clean water and helps prevent illness. Or how a dairy cow helps farmers work their way out of poverty by providing milk to drink and sell.”

Nunes says gifts from the catalog can change people’s lives.

“When you purchase items from this catalog, your gifts of love tell a story that eases suffering, ends poverty and promotes peace,” he writes.

LWR gifts include:

  • $18 to send eight quilts overseas.
  • $20 to educate an orphan whose parents died of AIDS.
  • $35 to provide emergency water filters.
  • $40 to provide a hen and chicks.
  • $45 to provide a piglet.
  • $75 to provide coffee seedlings.
  • $100 to provide a goat.
  • $250 to purchase an acre of farmland.
  • 375 to provide a dairy cow.

All gifts are tax-deductible and include gift cards.
