Needed: medical volunteers for Haiti

General practice physicians, surgeons, and emergency-room personnel are especially needed to treat victims of the Jan. 12 earthquake in Haiti, according to LCMS World Relief and Human Care (WR-HC).

The medical volunteers are needed to serve on at least three more WR-HC emergency Mercy Medical Teams (MMT), including one that may leave for Haiti as early as Jan. 26.  The first Haiti MMT has been treating refugees in the Dominican Republic, on the border with Haiti, since Jan. 19.  More teams are being organized to serve in Haiti or the Dominican Republic Feb. 13-23 and March 11-21.

Volunteers should be in good health and have a valid passport, as well as up-to-date inoculations for typhoid, hepatitis A and hepatitis B.  Anti-malaria medication also is recommended.

For more information, or to register, visit the MMT Web site at www.lcms.org/mercyteams and send an e-mail with dates you are available, your medical specialty, and previous experience in overseas or triage situations, to mercymedical@lcms.org (please copy Maggie Karner at maggie.karner@lcms.org).
