“Scripture in the Church: Formative or Formality?” is the title of the 21st Annual Theological Symposium, to be held Sept. 21-22 on the campus of Concordia Seminary, St. Louis.
Dr. Stephen Fowl, professor of theology at Loyola University Maryland, Baltimore, will be the symposium’s main presenter. He will share a perspective on Scripture and the church from outside the Lutheran tradition.
Symposium participants will have a “hands on” experience with discussion and interaction on specific topics.
Two plenaries will describe the use of the Scripture within the LCMS: Concordia Seminary professors Dr. Joel Okamoto and Dr. Timothy Saleska will speak on “Scriptures and their Uses” and “Interpretation in Communities,” respectively.
Dr. Joel Lehenbauer, executive director of the Synod’s Commission on Theology and Church Relations (CTCR), and seminary faculty members Dr. Charles Arand and Dr. Paul Raabe, both drafters of recently published documents, will discuss the use of Scripture in CTCR documents.
Three new “study Bibles” also will be discussed in a session led by seminary professor Dr. David Schmitt and LCMS pastors Rev. Matthew Hoehner and Rev. Mark Hoehner.
Following the plenaries, participants will have an opportunity to take part in faculty-led discussions of the presentations.
Full registration is $130 per person ($140 after Sept. 7) and includes program materials, a buffet reception, and refreshments. Partial registration also is available. Registration deadline is Sept. 10.
