Worship resources are available on the LCMS website to assist congregations in observing the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Because congregations likely will observe this anniversary in a variety of ways, a complete service has not been prepared. Instead, congregations are encouraged to choose which of the available resources will best serve their particular needs.
Among the resources are various propers for a “Day of Supplication and Prayer” (Lutheran Service Book: Altar Book, Pages 992-93). The color for this observance is violet or purple. The other option is to remain with the propers (or at least the readings) for the assigned day.
Available resources include:
- Introit for a “Day of Supplication and Prayer” — This Introit is expanded from the version provided in the LSB: Altar Book, and includes an appropriate antiphon that may be sung by the congregation.
- Psalm 62 — A psalm for use in Matins or Morning Prayer.
- Readings — Several sets of readings are listed, including those for a “Day of Supplication and Prayer,” Proper 19 in Series A, and the “Twelfth Sunday after Trinity,” as well as additional readings.
- Hymns — A list of suggested hymns is provided, including “There Is a Time for Everything” (LSB 762), which was originally written in 2002 for the first anniversary of 9/11.
- Collects — Several “Collects of the Day” and other prayers are provided.
- Responsive reading — This reading draws together a number of suggested psalm verses.
- Litany — This Litany, which is slightly adapted from what appears in LSB (Pages 288-89), may replace the “Kyrie” in the Divine Service, in which case the “Gloria in Excelsis” would be omitted. In Matins or Vespers, it may be used in place of the “Kyrie” at the beginning of the prayers.
- “Prayer of the Church” — The “Prayer of the Church” is provided in a form of bid and petition to include a large number of requests. Additional petitions can be added, based on congregational needs.
All the resources are available free of charge and may be downloaded (some as reproducible bulletin inserts) from the website www.lcms.org/9-11.
