Higher Things to hold three March retreats

Higher Things — an LCMS Recognized Service Organization — is holding three retreats in March, including its first-ever in Canada.

Starting with their titles and in chronological order, the retreats are:

  • “Invocation: A Higher Things Day Retreat,” March 5 at Living Word Lutheran Church in The Woodlands, Texas. There is no registration fee, but donations are requested.
  • “The Law, the Gospel … and the Rest of Your Life,” March 18 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, West Mount Forest, Ontario, Canada. Registration is $20 per person.
  • “The Divine Service: Our Lord Speaks and We Listen,” March 25-27 at Forest Glen Camp in Northshore Huntsville, Texas. Registration is $105 per person.

The March 5 retreat is for youth and adults.  The other two retreats are planned for youth, although adults are welcome to attend.

Higher Things also is planning an April 8-9 pre-confirmation retreat for youth in Kearney, Mo.

The organization holds retreats throughout the year and larger multiple conferences each summer.

“It’s one of the ways we assist parents, congregations and pastors in cultivating and promoting a Lutheran identity among youth,” said Higher Things Conference Coordinator Sandra Ostapowich, who added that the organization’s leaders are “especially excited to be having our first-ever … retreat in Canada this year.”

Higher Things Retreats are hosted by congregations, typically range in size between 20-300 people and vary in their length. Those retreats “model the larger-sized conferences in that they schedule specific times for worship, study and fun while daring youth to be Lutheran,” according to a news release from the organization.

This summer’s three Higher Things youth conferences are set for July 5-8 at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas; July 12-15 at Illinois State University, Bloomington-Normal; and July 19-22 at Emory University in Atlanta.

“Higher Things provides all sorts of great opportunities for youth in between and leading up to conferences,” said Rev. George Borghardt, Higher Things conference executive. “This includes our quarterly magazine, weekend regional retreats, [the] daily devotional Reflections available for free download online and our world-class interactive website. The bottom line is that there is always something going on at Higher Things.”
