Immediately after the deadly 7.0 earthquake in Haiti on Jan. 12, 2010, which killed more than 300,000 people and left more than 1 million homeless, The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) reached out to help the people of Haiti with Christ’s Gospel of mercy and peace. This video, “From Horror to Hope: Haiti 2013,” chronicles the relief and recovery efforts of the LCMS with partners in Haiti, including the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Haiti (ELCH). Generous donors gave $5.6 million for mercy work in Haiti, which enabled the LCMS and its partners to provide shipments of emergency supplies, operate medical clinics, provide temporary housing, support orphanages, install clean-water wells and sanitary latrines, and construct permanent homes. Through the LCMS and ELCH initiative, “Building Homes and Hope in Haiti,” earthquake survivors moved from squalid refugee camps into three Lutheran villages in Jacmel, Beaudouin and Leogane. The LCMS’ formal response to the earthquake ended in March 2013, but ongoing needs will continue to be considered as development project grants. We continue to keep the people of Haiti in our prayers, that the Lord would bring them comfort in the midst of their suffering and teach them to rely on Him and Him alone.
