Seminaries offer Lenten preaching workshops

The Synod’s two seminaries are offering Lenten preaching workshops in January.

  • Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, will present a one-day pre-Lenten workshop for pastors on Friday, Jan. 18, called “Good and Perfect Gifts: A Lenten Sermon Series on Isaiah 56-66.”

The workshop will be led by the Rev. Dr. Reed Lessing, associate professor and director of the Graduate School at the seminary.

Each sermon in this series takes up a specific gift from a text in Isaiah 56-66, interprets it through the life and times of Isaiah “and then creatively applies it to Christians as they journey in Lent from the cross to the empty tomb,” according to a seminary news release.

The workshop is designed to help participants become more familiar with this often-neglected section of Isaiah, and “equip and inspire them to proclaim God’s good and perfect gifts that flow from our Savior’s bitter suffering and death.”

Registration for the one-day workshop is $50, which includes lunch.

  • Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, Ind., will present its Lenten preaching workshop, “Preaching the Lord’s Passion with Dr. Luther,” on Monday, Jan. 21.

Leading the one-day workshop will be the Rev. Dr. Naomichi Masaki, associate professor of Systematic Theology and STM supervisor at the seminary.

“From November 1528 through June 1529, Dr. Luther left us with his most extensive treatment of the Passion text from John’s Gospel in his Saturday Vespers sermons in Wittenberg,” according to the seminary in a description of the workshop. “Instead of focusing on the details of Christ’s suffering that provoke an imitative participation in His Passion, Luther rejoices in the forgiveness of sin that Jesus has accomplished as the Lamb of God and bestows to us through the Predigtamt.”

Registration for the workshop is $40 and includes lunch. For more information or to register, visit www.ctsfw.edu/lentenpreaching or call the seminary at 260-452-2204. Questions may be directed via email to leeanna.rondot@ctsfw.edu.
