Two alleged Dorner victims graduated from Concordia, Irvine

Concordia University in Irvine, Calif. — one of the 10 Concordia University System schools operated by the LCMS nationwide — will be the site of a memorial service for two graduates who were killed by suspect Christopher Dorner.

The bodies of Monica Quan, 28, and her fiance, Keith Lawrence, 27, were discovered Feb. 3 in their condominium’s parking garage in Irvine. Both had been shot multiple times with a 9-millimeter pistol.

Quan’s father — a former Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) captain — represented Dorner at a disciplinary hearing that led to his firing from the LAPD in 2009, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Dorner is suspected of killing four people and wounding three others in retaliation for being fired from the LAPD. Evidence indicates that he fatally shot himself Feb. 12 in a Big Bear, Calif., cabin that caught fire after police used tear gas to draw him out.

Quan graduated from Concordia, Irvine, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Sports Science in 2007 and a Master’s Degree in Coaching and Athletic Administration in 2009. She played basketball for the school’s 2005-07 seasons and was an assistant coach from 2007 to 2009.

Lawrence graduated in 2008 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Management, and played basketball for the university from 2006 to 2008. In 2007 he was responsible for making the winning shot, sending the game into its fourth overtime, in the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) National Tournament Semifinals, earning the team a trip to the 2007 NAIA National Championship game.

Counselors in the university’s Wellness Center are available to “help faculty, staff and students process the news and to cope,” according to a Feb. 15 Concordia University news release.

President Dr. Kurt Krueger said the “campus community is shocked and saddened by this tragic news. Our prayers go out to the families and friends of Monica and Keith, and know that we mourn along with them.

“Monica and Keith were not only outstanding basketball players, but they were also good students and kind and caring individuals,” Krueger told Reporter. “They will be missed and remembered by many people in the Concordia community.”

The memorial service for Quan and Lawrence is tentatively planned for 11 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 24. For updated information, click here.
