“Whom Shall I Fear?: Strength in Times of Anxiety and Fear” is the topic of a free webinar scheduled for 1-2 p.m. Central time on Monday, Nov 7.
Sponsored by LCMS Youth Ministry, the webinar is a support resource for professional and lay leaders who work with youth.
The National Institute of Mental Health reports that research indicates that one in four American teens experience an anxiety disorder at some point in their lives and about one in 10 teens experience major depression yearly.
“Teenagers face fears about rejection, abandonment, not being good enough, not being accepted, failure, pressure to succeed, the future and more,” said LCMS Director of Youth Ministry Rev. Mark Kiessling. “How do we as youth workers care for teens in their fears and encourage them in the promises of Christ’s love for us? How do we equip young people to share the light of Christ with their friends and family members?”
During the webinar, Director of Christian Education (DCE) Rebecca Duport is set to share biblical insight and practical advice for supporting young people as they deal with fears and anxieties of living in our fallen world.
Duport is the director of the DCE program at Concordia University, Irvine, Calif. She previously served 16 years as a DCE for Lutheran congregations in Idaho, Kentucky, Arkansas and Florida. Her experience is in life-span education roles — working with young children, youth, family and older adults.
Duport spoke at the 2016 LCMS Youth Gathering, leading two interest-center sessions titled “Home Hurts” and “Naked and Afraid.”
