Call for nominations: head of school, Hong Kong International School
The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod Board for International Mission (BIM) officially announces the position opening for the role of head of school for the Hong Kong International School (HKIS), an LCMS-owned institution serving as an integral part of the Synod’s international mission operations in the Asia region.
The head of school (HOS) has responsibility for recruiting and leading the functional, administrative and faculty teams fulfilling the school’s mission and delivering its stated Student Learning Results (SLRs). The HOS acts as “the face of HKIS” to all constituencies using leadership, communication and engagement skills.
The HOS is directly responsible to the HKIS Board of Managers (BOM), but also maintains an ultimate responsibility to the LCMS BIM, ensuring effective communication and coordination between the organizations.
In concert with the HKIS BOM, he/she leads the creation and articulation of the school’s strategy and is a thought leader locally, regionally and globally on issues relating to primary and secondary education, particularly in an international setting.
Key areas of responsibility:
- Acts as chief executive of the institution, providing visionary leadership to both academic and support functions. Sets best-in-class standards for performance, leads and evaluates direct reports and programs to ensure (1) delivery of desired outcomes, both mission/SLR and operational, (2) efficient and effective operation of the institution and (3) that the needs of the institution and its constituencies are met.
- Works in close concert with the HKIS BOM to craft the institution’s long-term strategy. Leads the execution of that strategy, including (1) recruiting, directing and retaining a world-class team of administrators, educators and functional professions, (2) obtaining and allocating the required financial resources, (3) developing world-class facilities, (4) delivering strong academic outcomes and (5) designing and delivering a broad set of co-curricular programs, with a strong emphasis on service.
- Acts as the visible and trusted “face of HKIS” and engages with all constituencies (parents, students, administrators, faculty, staff, government, Hong Kong community, LCMS, the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and other relevant organizations) to articulate, advocate and defend the institution’s mission, strategy, performance and interests. A thought leader locally, regionally and globally on issues related to primary and secondary education, particularly in an international setting.
- Works with HKIS chief financial officer to ensure financial decisions and allocation of funds are aligned with the strategic plan and program priorities while ensuring the long-term financial health of the school.
- Works as the chief liaison between the LCMS and HKIS to ensure that the LCMS BIM and the HKIS BOM are kept duly informed and coordinated on relevant issues as required by the school’s governing documents; responsible for nurturing the relationship between the organizations and ensuring clear communication.
Qualifications:
- Advanced degree in a relevant field (Ph.D. or master’s).
- 10 or more years of leadership experience, preferably in a complex institution with rigorous academic standards.
- Proven track record in transformational “change” leadership.
- Proven track record of broad and successful community engagement.
- Proven track record of building and retaining a high-performing team.
- Proven success in institutional advancement campaigns and significant facilities projects.
- Motivated by the challenge of leading an institution grounded in the Christian faith but encompassing a diverse community representing many different faiths, ethnicities and nationalities.
- Leadership: visible, transformative, principled, service oriented.
- Visionary, strategic, thinker.
- Cultural sensitivity: able to thrive in diverse, multicultural, international setting.
- Strong communication, diplomatic and community-engagement skills.
- Results oriented: ability to achieve an organization’s strategic vision through planning, execution and performance management.

- Must be a rostered member of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod and eligible to receive a call for this role.
