But is it “one”? Is it “holy”? When we look at the church, it seems racked by divisions. The pews are filled with sinners. And we haven’t even gotten to “Christian” and “apostolic” yet.
Still, we confess a belief in the “one, holy Christian and apostolic church.” How is this possible?
The June/July issue of The Lutheran Witness sets out to answer this question and discuss the Una Sancta, the one holy church. The issue covers the biblical teaching of the church as well as the history of the church. It offers suggestions for pastors and laity on how to work together despite division and difficulty. Other articles explain how the LCMS fits into this idea of the one church and help set expectations for the role of pastors and laity in the Christian congregation. What should the people expect of their pastor? What should he expect of God’s people?
Until our Lord returns, we will not see a fully united church. And yet, we continue to believe and confess it because our Lord promises it and delivers this unity through His Word and Sacraments.
