The Rev. Dr. Allan R. Buss was elected to his second three-year term as president of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) Northern Illinois District at the district’s 60th convention, held March 11–12 at Concordia University Chicago in River Forest, Ill.
Buss was elected on the first ballot.
Also elected were:
- Cory Estby of Grant Park, Ill., as first vice-president;
- Caleb Schauer of Union, Ill., as second vice-president;
- Michael Brown of Barrington, Ill., as third vice-president; and
- Steven Anderson of Chicago as fourth vice-president.
The officers will be installed on a date to be determined.
During the convention, delegates adopted resolutions to:
- Set “Word, Wellness, and Witness” as the district’s official focus;
- Designate the country of Belize as the district’s international mission focus;
- Deplore the sin of racism, encourage congregations to implement Res. 11-04 from the Synod’s 2019 convention, and mandate the appointment of a task force to study past efforts at multiethnic ministries and propose ways to move forward; and
- Confess that the church has the unique and essential task of preaching the Gospel and administering the sacraments. Although the church “is not entirely independent of the government’s left-hand rule as she deals with non-spiritual matters,” the government does not have authority to interfere with the church’s God-given functions.
The convention theme was Col. 3:16: “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.”
