MILWAUKEE — On July 30, during the 68th Regular Convention of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS), South Dakota District President Rev. Scott C. Sailer, chairman of Floor Committee 13 for Registration, Credentials and Elections, announced LCMS President Rev. Dr. Matthew C. Harrison’s re-election, which occurred prior to the convention.

Sailer thanked LCMS Secretary Rev. Dr. John W. Sias and his office for their work to ensure fairness in this election. LCMS First Vice-President Rev. Peter K. Lange highlighted Sias’ work — along with his assistants, Amy Schaeffer and Pamela Weeke — in the year leading up to the election. The delegates showed their thanks with a round of applause.

Sailer explained the nominations and election process, which concluded when the results were announced on June 21. Harrison was re-elected as LCMS president on the first ballot after receiving 52.32% of votes cast. The internet voting was facilitated by YesElections, an election contractor, on behalf of the LCMS Office of the Secretary.

“I would like to thank you for this. It’s been quite a run,” said Harrison, who then thanked a series of people, including those who work with him at the LCMS International Center, the LCMS Council of Presidents, the other candidates for Synod president, and Village Lutheran Church in Ladue, Mo., where Harrison serves as assistant pastor.

Harrison introduced his family. Addressing the assembly, he said, “Without Christ, [this] would not be possible. … Christ sustains you and makes you what you should be at every turn. This job would be unbearable without the prayers of the saints … [and] without the love of my dear wife, Kathy, and my family. Thank you, and God bless you.”
