On May 18, during daily chapel at The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) International Center in St. Louis, Kevin Herweck was installed as the new chief executive officer of Concordia Plan Services (CPS). He follows Jim Sanft, who recently retired from CPS after 18 years as CEO (and a total of 27 years with the organization).
Herweck first joined CPS as assistant vice-president of Mission Integration in August 2022. He later served as vice-president and chief product officer, and most recently as vice-president and chief operating officer. He brings more than 30 years of experience, serving in various industries, in the areas of strategic leadership and organizational effectiveness. Before joining CPS, he served in the property and casualty insurance industry. His roles have included oversight of project management, process improvement, strategic alignment and execution, and organizational change management. He graduated with a degree in psychology with an emphasis in business from Saint Louis University.
Herweck said he is looking forward to continuing the “upward trend” that is currently in place at CPS — “we are strong and stable” — and “making it even better”:
“Our employees truly care about the ministries and people we serve. Our team is focused on ways we can serve our ministries and members better — whether through technology that gives them easier access to their information or through personal contact that shows how much we care for them.”
One example of a new project aimed at better serving the Synod is the development of “an insurance captive to offer property and casualty coverages to ministries. It was created because of the escalating premiums and coverage issues LCMS ministries face. … We will continue to listen to LCMS ministry partners and assist where possible to bring solutions that help them spread the Word of God.”
Herweck grew up in the St. Louis area, attending an LCMS church and LCMS schools his entire life. “Christ Community Lutheran School [in Kirkwood] and Lutheran High School South [St. Louis] formed me during my education. … When I consider the responsibility of serving the church’s workers, the faces of the many ministers, teachers and principals who positively impacted my life stick in my mind.”
Herweck and his wife, Kameron, have five children, including a son-in-law, and are active members in their Lutheran congregation, where Herweck has served in a variety of capacities.
