The Board for Mission Services (BFMS) seeks nominations for associate director for ministry to the Armed Forces (MAF). The associate director for MAF reports to the director of the Ministry to the Armed Forces Committee.
The associate director for ministry to the Armed Forces administers all clerical and budgetary matters for the department, serves as the chief editor and supervisor of the “Ministry-by-Mail” program, manages all chaplain personnel records, as well as all archival and military pastoral acts records. This person serves as financial officer for the Ministry to the Armed Forces, preparing annual budgets and reviewing and approving expenditures under the guidance of the director and the Ministry to the Armed Forces Committee, and assists in preparing materials for the solicitation of funds in support of Ministry to the Armed Forces.
The associate director also assists the director in conducting official visits with active duty and VA chaplains, their supervisors and commanders and with military contact pastors and ILC congregations overseas serving military personnel. He also assists the director in the planning and execution of active duty Lutheran Chaplain Professional Development Seminars and VA Chaplain Seminars.
Nominees must be an active member of a Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod congregation, faithful to the Holy Scriptures and the Lutheran Confessions, and supportive of the Synod’s Constitution, Bylaws and policies; must be an ordained pastor of the Synod with extensive active duty experience in military service. However, as mandated by Department of Defense Instruction 1304.28 of June 11, 2004, a nominee cannot assume this role and remain as a serving chaplain (active duty, Reserve or National Guard). A nominee should be respected by his peers in the chaplaincy, good reputation and possess a working knowledge of the various branches of the military and the Department of Veterans Affairs; have demonstrated writing and computer skills with some experience in editing materials for publications, incorporating photos or illustrations with texts and preparing electronic presentations for briefings; possess experience in the preparation of budgets and the management of financial data, as well as in the supervision of office administration.
