Mercy Medical Team Trip to Madagascar

During a March 2013 LCMS Mercy Medical Team trip to Madagascar, team members treated 1,321 patients and filled 4,000 prescriptions. Among those helped: a woman with severe goiter, from a lack of iodine in her diet, who received a surgical resection; a 10-year-old with the aging disease Progeria who had an ulcerated wound on her stomach and received surgery costing about $100; and a mother of twins, who was turned away from a city hospital after difficulties surfaced with her second delivery and she didn’t have $120 to pay for a Caesarean section. She was brought to the team in a rickshaw cart and later gave birth to a healthy baby boy. Wrote the team members: “We were touched by so many patients and their stories we will hold dear to our hearts.”
