Convening Jan. 3, the 115th United States Congress includes six LCMS congregation members who served in the previous session — five members of the House of Representatives and one senator. All of them are Republicans.
Re-elected in November, LCMS members serving in the House are Dr. Larry Bucshon (R-Ind.), Glenn Grothman (R-Wis.), Erik Paulsen (R-Minn.), Dave Reichert (R-Wash.) and John Shimkus (R-Ill.).
In the Senate, Cory Gardner (R-Colo.) was elected to a six-year term in 2014.
Posted January 20, 2017 / Updated January 22, 2017 (The story and its headline are changed from initially reporting that seven LCMS members serve in the 115th session of Congress. Cynthia Lummis, who was incorrectly reported as having been re-elected to the House of Representatives in November, was not re-electeed. )
I think that it is interesting that 4 of the 6 are from Midwestern states.
Great to know this. Thanks for sharing!
That’s wonderful
Funny how all 6 people are Republicans?. I would like to see how many ELCA members of Congress are democats. Maybe a pattern.
I am ashamed that these six Republicans are LCMS Lutherans, who are supporting Donald Trump in taking away Constitutional rights from people and breaking the law. It was my understanding that we, as Christians, are called to help the poor, the needy, and the oppressed. Instead, these Lutherans support a president who is doing the direct opposite of what Jesus would want us to do. Would Jesus want us to ban refugees who are fleeing war? Would Jesus want us to only allow people into the U.S. from countries where Trump has business dealings? Would Jesus only care about Trump’s millionaire/billionaire cronies making even more money at the expense of the poor and middle class? Would Jesus be happy with all of the racist and sexist comments being bantered around? I don’t think Jesus would like what’s going on in the U.S. right now, and I also don’t think he would like what he hears and sees going on in some churches right now. What’s going on in our country is very sad and scary. These Lutheran men are playing a role in that.
Yay Cory of Colorado!
Thanks for sharing. This is comforting.
