“I was glad when they said to me, ‘Let us go to the house of the Lord!’” (Psalm 122:1)
Communities are in various stages of reopening in the wake of COVID-19 crisis and its lockdowns. Just as you have adjusted to the challenges of livestreaming services, you now face the challenges and the opportunities of reopening: gathering your flock back together and reaching out to your community.
In a recent video of encouragement for reopening churches, LCMS President Rev. Dr. Matthew C. Harrison said, “While we’re all looking forward to coming back together in the Lord’s house, the timing will not be the same for everyone. It will be quite different too, as we spread out, wear masks, use sanitizer, etc.”
“And so I tell you now, the words of Jesus apply to you,” Harrison continued. “’Come to me all you who are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.’ Don’t doubt for a moment that Christ is using all of this for your good.”
Watch videoHarrison also suggested multiple resources for congregations that are beginning the reopening process:
• CDC Guidelines for Community and Faith-Based Organizations, which offer practical guidance for churches as they reopen.
• Welcome Back Media Kit from the LCMS Office of National Mission and LCMS Communications, which includes resources for congregations to invite their members and communities back to church.
• Resources from the LCMS Office of National Mission which are currently being developed as a part of the Making Disciples for Life internet resource center, and will be available in the coming weeks.
