HOUSTON – The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod will return to Houston for its 2010 convention, following action by the convention that concluded business here on July 19.
The 63rd Regular Convention of the 2.6 million-member church body met July 14-19 in Houston, meeting at the George R. Brown Convention Center. The resolution cited the complimentary convention center rental, complimentary transportation, and favorable hotel rates. The president of the LCMS Texas District, Rev. Kenneth Hennings, also submitted an invitation to hold the 2010 convention here.
In other business brought before the convention from the Floor Committee on Program and Finance, delegates adopted Res. 4-10 to encourage funding for the Center for Hispanic Studies, a program for preparing Hispanic church workers. It is housed and funded by Concordia Seminary, St. Louis.
The resolution thanked Concordia Seminary for recognizing the importance of the ministry, encouraged the seminary to continue funding the Center for Hispanic Studies, and encouraged the LCMS Board of Directors to seek additional funding to maintain and expand the program.
The Center for Hispanic Studies, formerly the Hispanic Institute of Theology, was previously funded by the Board for Mission Services and the Board for University Education. That funding was eliminated several years ago.
The theme of the July 14-19 convention is “One Message – Christ! His Love is Here for You!”
