Two LCMS-related Hispanic ministries — Lutheran Hispanic Missionary Institute and Ysleta Lutheran Mission Human Care, both of El Paso, Texas — are sponsoring weeklong, intensive Spanish-language training courses in 2011.
“Conversations in Spanish” will be held Jan. 16-22 and Aug. 7-13 in El Paso. Additional “Jump Start” Spanish experiences are offered Jan. 15 and Aug. 6, preceding the weeklong intensives.
Language instruction will be provided by Language Plus, a language institute located in El Paso that also trains the FBI and Border Patrol. The courses will take place in a classroom setting, as well in the El Paso community, and will include information on Hispanic culture, ways to involve people in ministry, and singing in Spanish.
The goal of the classes is to prepare students to get involved in Hispanic ministries in their home areas and to better understand the lives and backgrounds of their Hispanic neighbors.
Registration is $675 and includes lodging in the Ysleta Lutheran Mission dormitory, most meals and an instruction book. A $20 discount is available for those who register prior to Nov. 25 for the January session and May 30 for the August session. Registration for each “Jump Start” experience is $50.
