ST. LOUIS, August 12, 2013—The Rev. Michael Meyer has accepted a call to serve as manager, LCMS Disaster Response, the disaster response and human care ministry of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS).
In this position, Meyer will assist with the church’s response to natural and man-made disasters occurring domestically and internationally. He will work with LCMS districts and congregations, LCMS Recognized Service Organizations and external relief organizations to implement the church’s immediate and long-term response to help people in the aftermath of disastrous events. Among Meyer’s responsibilities will be oversight of the LCMS District Disaster Response Program, in which he will work with volunteer District Disaster Response Coordinators (DDRCs) to ensure ongoing disaster-readiness training and preparation among LCMS districts, congregations, international staff and partner churches worldwide.
“Michael is a great addition to the LCMS’ disaster response team,” said the Rev. Gregory K. Williamson, chief mission officer for the LCMS. “Michael will significantly enhance disaster response capability among our Synod’s stakeholders. He intends to provide training and instruction for congregations and districts in order to enhance their ability to respond to local and regional disasters. Michael is eager to meet our ministry partners, and I anticipate that his instruction will be well received and readily employed.”
Prior to joining the staff of the LCMS International Center in St. Louis, Meyer was serving as pastor at Emmaus Lutheran Church, Denver, Colo., which was his first call after graduating from seminary. A 2008 graduate of Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, Ind., Meyer also holds a bachelor’s degree in music from Southern Methodist University, Dallas.
