Registration is open through Nov. 10 for “Liberty,” the 2017 National LCMS Campus Ministry Conference, planned for Jan. 4-6 on the campus of the University of Maryland in College Park, Md.
“ ‘Liberty’ will provide a forum to not only explore the biblical themes of our freedom in Christ but also address fundamental issues related to religious liberty, the First Amendment and cultivating the vocation of Christian citizenship on campus,” said the Rev. Marcus Zill, director of LCMS Campus Ministry and LCMS U and organizer of the event. “It will encourage and equip our college students not only in their faith, but also as they live, move and have their being on the front lines of religious-liberty issues that seem to be multiplying each day.”
The conference is geared for college students and campus-ministry workers, although anyone interested in campus ministry may attend.
The three-day event will include plenary presentations, sectionals on a wide variety of topics of interest to college students, worship and time for fellowship.
Scheduled plenary speakers are:
- Rear Admiral (Ret.) Rev. Dr. Daniel Gard, president of Concordia University Chicago, River Forest, Ill., and recently retired Deputy Chief of Chaplains for Reserve Matters in the U.S. Navy;
- Tim Goeglein, vice-president for External Relations at Focus on the Family in Washington, D.C., and former special assistant to President George W. Bush;
- LCMS President Rev. Dr. Matthew C. Harrison;
- Mark Hemingway, senior writer for The Weekly Standard; and
- Mollie Ziegler Hemingway, senior editor at The Federalist.
The registration fee is $270 per person. This covers conference sessions; breakfasts; lunch on Jan. 4 and three nights (Jan. 3-5) lodging at the conference hotel, the Hyatt Place Washington DC/US Capitol (based on quad occupancy). Rates for those who would prefer other occupancy arrangements are provided on the registration page.
“Liberty” is the third LCMS U conference, following “Unwrapped” in 2013 and “Taboo” in 2015, when students focused on apologetics and marriage/sexuality issues, respectively. Both previous conferences were held at Saint Louis University and were attended by an average of 450 college students and campus-ministry workers.

How will conference attendees get from the DC hotel to the Student Union at the University of Maryland, and return late at night from the University of Maryland to the hotel on Wednesday after the banquet?
Thank you for your comment. A transportation plan is in place that will involve a combination of shuttle buses and utilization of the DC MetroLink. Costs for such services have been factored into the cost of registration.
Is the conference only for students in the united states? Can college students from Africa participate, atleast it can save as a lutheran youth exchange conference for our campus mininstry. We have students at Wisconsin international university college ghana who are from lutheran church senegal,lutheran church nigeria,lutheran church Etiopia,kenya, Tazania etc.
Any and all college students and campus ministry workers from our LCMS partner churches around the world are certainly welcome to attend the LIBERTY conference at their own expense, including the arrangement of one’s own travel and lodging. We certainly will do all that we can to accommodate them as best as possible.
