On Oct. 15, the Rev. Dr. Walter Steele, Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) missionary to the Philippines, was installed as a professor at the Lutheran Theological Seminary and Training Center of the Lutheran Church in the Philippines (LCP), a partner church of the LCMS. The seminary is located in Baguio, in the northern part of the island of Luzon. Steele began teaching in November, with a schedule that includes biblical interpretation, the Epistle to the Hebrews, and three classes on doctrine.
Steele and his wife, Robyn, who serves as a nutrition educator at the seminary, recently transitioned to the Philippines after 5–1/2 years of service in the LCMS Africa region, based in Kenya.
In the Steeles’ November missionary newsletter, Rev. Steele shared a reflection on his installation.
“What a wonderful day it was! … It is a privilege to serve alongside the Filipino faculty. The leadership of the LCP, the seminary faculty and the students were there to celebrate. The food and fellowship that followed were wonderful. …
“My work [in the Philippines] will center at the seminary, but it will also extend to the entirety of our partner church. There is need for continuing education, support in resources (especially books for pastors and students), and coordination between the LCMS and LCP, as we work together to share the Gospel, plant Lutheran churches and demonstrate Christ’s mercy. There is also work to do within the Asia region. At our next regional meeting I will be finding out more about that.”
