Lutheran World Relief (LWR), Baltimore, is offering three Marian Stegemoeller Memorial Scholarships for seminary students interested in taking part in an LWR study tour in 2008.
Each scholarship covers the cost of one full study tour, including round-trip airfare, meals, lodging, in-country transportation, educational materials, tips, and honorariums.
LWR study tours are designed to give participants a firsthand look at the relief and development organization’s overseas work and are open to anyone. The scholarships for seminarians are made possible by a by an LWR donor; this is the sixth year the scholarships have been offered.
One scholarship will be awarded for each of the following study visits:
- On LWR’s “Coffee with a Conscience — The LWR Coffee Project,” Jan. 4-13, participants will visit coffee farms and interact with farm families in Nicaragua to learn about “fair trade” coffee and its impact on poverty and other social-justice issues. Cost is $1,325, plus roundtrip airfare to Managua. Application deadline is Oct. 8.
- “Holy Land: Prospects for Peace,” Feb. 17-29, includes visits to projects supported by LWR in Jerusalem and the West Bank. Other sites to be visited include Nazareth, the Dead Sea, and the Church of the Nativity and Manger Square in Bethlehem. Participants will have opportunities to see how LWR and its partners are working for peace between Palestinians and Israelis. The $2,895 cost includes roundtrip airfare from Newark, N.J. Deadline is Nov. 15.
- “Kenya and Uganda: Karibu! Hospitality and Hope in East Africa,” will take place April 26-May 9. More details are expected to be available by Nov. 1.
