Necessary conversations: The church parsonage

Thank you for addressing this issue. The parsonage allows church workers to survive on limited salaries. Churches should realize that maintaining these homes may be one of the advantages of securing a church worker when benefits and salaries are inadequate . Many pastors and teachers now prefer to own their own homes giving them some independence , and relieving them from the frustrations of dealing with church councils and elderly leaders who may not always understand the current economy or the modern difficulties of raising a family that were not issues in the past. Some historic parsonages should be refurbished , upgraded, and improved. Others should probably be sold or demolished as the cost of major remodel is prohibitive . No one should have to live in mold infested or substandard homes. Churches face challenges with falling membership numbers and the aging of members.Hopefully,, congregations can find innovative ways to continue to see that church workers have access to safe affordable housing.

  2. Rev. Thomas E. Myhre says:

In my 40 years as a pastor, living in 2 different parsonages, I felt that I should live in the parsonage as if it were my own house, even though the church owned it. Minor things I would take care of, letting the trustees know, but major items were things that they needed to do. We had the trustees come and look over the parsonage every other year so they were aware of the shape of the place and I would always ask them, if they would live in it was or if there was something that they would replace. This cooperative spirit went a long way.

Our church was very ressponsive to our need to have our parsonage basement ‘retiled’ so our son with severe allergies did not get physically ill anymore. It cost a lot of money, but we brought it to the attention of our church when we began to notice a pattern of sickness, and our church fixed the problem without question. We are very grateful for their quick response.
