Shelley Moeller, vice-president of Gospel Outreach for Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, presented grant checks to The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod and its ministry leaders on Wednesday, Jan. 6, at the International Center in Kirkwood, Mo.
Floodwaters swept through St. Louis and other Missouri communities in the days following Christmas 2015, and the massive flooding damaged homes and business while also closing several roads, including highways and interstates.
Four of the six matching or challenge-match initiatives support core LCMS work and the other two target special opportunities to extend the Synod’s impact in the world.
Although they have been several years in development, the LCMS Board for National Mission’s new policies now formally chart a course for the Synod’s Office of National Mission (ONM) as it works with and serves the Synod’s districts and other domestic entities and seeks to carry out the mission priorities established for it by the Synod in convention.

Our D.C. office will produce significant briefs on vital topics, such as the two kingdoms teaching. It will provide contact with LCMS elected officials, as well as encouragement and training for LCMS members (and other Lutherans) interested in running for office or serving in government. It will be a locus for the many young LCMS staffers who serve in D.C. and who are marvelous and active Christians.
The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod’s Office of National Mission has continually asked one main question: “How can we best serve the districts of the Synod, and with them the congregations, schools and workers of the church?” That is no small task.
A $25,000 grant from the Synod’s Office of National Mission will be used by leaders of five LCMS congregations to bring hope and healing to the community.
